Can You Play A Harp?

January 31, 2020

DAILY PROVERBS:

Proverbs 3:12-15 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth. Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.

OUTLOOK ON THE IN BOOK:

I didn’t really enjoy all of school. SURPRISED! Probably not. In fact, most children at some age have the same dislike of school. Many children see the purpose of school as, meeting other people, and getting a good enough grade to get out. That’s until they actually get out in working society, or into college. Then they find out, knowledge is a key that can open many doors. In factories, they’ll see those who have never worked in manufacturing, telling them what to do. Why? They’re perceived to have wisdom, because they have knowledge.

However, wisdom does not come from knowledge alone. You need knowledge, but you also need to know how to use it. If I were to sit you down in front of a harp and say, “this is how you must earn a living,” what would you do? (For you harp players out there, imagine it was a welder.) You would probably think to yourself, “I’m going to starve to death.” Why? Because even though you may have fingers to play, you have no knowledge of how it’s played. Even if your knowledge includes the order of the strings, and the notes that they produce, you don’t have the practical wisdom to apply such knowledge and play it. Knowing that it’s a harp, and what the strings do, does not give you the wisdom it takes to play this instrument. However, you could learn to play! With study, practice, and diligence, you can learn to play the harp. You might never be a concert harpist, but you could possibly earn a living.

That’s what our passage is saying today. Things are just things without both wisdom and knowledge combined. Life itself is nothing if you have no knowledge of the Creator of life, and the wisdom to apply His truths to that life.

THE WORD WALKING IN ME:

The old saying; “money does not buy happiness,” is so true. Money, or things, will never bring lasting joy into your life. Only God, the Creator of life, can bring true meaning, and real everlasting joy. Get to know Him and learn to enjoy life, as He shares His knowledge, and His wisdom, into your life.

The Fruit Of Love

January 30, 2020

DAILY PROVERBS:

Proverbs 3:9-11 Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:

OUTLOOK ON THE IN BOOK:

People today want to tell you how much they love Jesus, that is until you start talking about the money that God graciously allowed them to obtain. However, in the Old Testament, the children of Israel who wanted to honor God above all, showed their faith and trust in Him by giving Him their firstfruits. What did that mean? It did not mean they went into the field, gathered ten baskets of fruit, and gave God one basket, or a tithe of the field. They had more faith in God than that. What it meant was they went out, and from the first picking of fruit gave all, or the majority of the harvest to God. Trusting God would replenish their crops for the remainder of the year. They gave God the best. Could a famine have come in their land? Sure. Nevertheless, they trusted God with their firstfruits.

I know, I know, some of you are saying; preacher we live in the day of grace, we’re not under the law. You’re right. So if people, who had not seen the Messiah, nor the salvation he delivered on Calvary’s Hill, trusted that He was coming, and gave Him their best, how is it that we who have experienced the life changing blood of Jesus from the cross would want to give Him less? What did God say He would do in return for their faith in Him? He will provide for all their needs. Make sure they have enough. Some people want to read this as a get rich quick verse. God never said he would make you rich. He did say; “So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.” In other words, if you trust God first, He’ll take care of your needs. If not, you may get only what you sew, or less.

THE WORD WALKING IN ME:

You’ll never out give God. If you don’t believe me, try it. If you give with a heart of love to God, you will never be bankrupt for the love God bestows in return. It’s the Fruit of Love.

God Put That There

January 29, 2020

DAILY PROVERBS:

Proverbs 3:5-8 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

OUTLOOK ON THE IN BOOK:

I once heard another preacher say, “To have an original thought is simply to forget where you first heard it.” He was talking about ideas used in the preaching of a sermon no doubt. However, the same seems to apply to everyone. Somehow, we forget where, and how we learned some things. Most of us don’t remember learning to drink from a glass. We do it every single day, but don’t remember learning this lesson in life. That’s partially because of our age at the time of learning it.

Still, it seems that over time, there are many things we forget, which we should have learned.

  • We too soon forget Salvation’s price paid for us.
  • We all too quickly forget people who gathered, and prayed for us to be saved.

  • We forget to continue to pray for others, after they receive Christ.

  • We forget that the wisdom to do daily things, did not just manifest itself in our brains. God planted it all there.

Animals have what we call instincts. They are natural tendencies to do certain things. Those instincts did not just happen, God placed them there. Humans also have natural instincts. It’s human instinct to want to be loved. God placed that there, so you would want Him to love you. When we do receive real unquestioned love, it’s our nature to love back. God also placed that there, so when he loved you, you would love Him in return. Not everything we know in this life did we learn from mankind. “Be not wise in thine own eyes.” Its God’s gentle way of reminding us, “Don’t think you’re so smart.” Our faith in God, and trust in Him, will add days and years to our life. In fact, it adds Eternity.

THE WORD WALKING IN ME:

Some people do not know God because they feel they have never experienced the true love of God. Let’s show the love of God to everyone we meet. Once God loves them through us, they can love Him too.

Enjoying Every Moment

January 28, 2020

DAILY PROVERBS:

Proverbs 3:1-4 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

OUTLOOK ON THE IN BOOK:

There are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day; days make months, months make years, and years placed together make a lifetime. For a lifetime to occur you must live each and every second of that life. You may not skip a few seconds here and there at will; you must live them all. You might ask, “what if I’m in a coma, I’d miss lots of time.” Not true. You might not remember the time, but you lived it, and you were affecting the lives of many around you. This chapter in Proverbs begins by reminding us to live each moment of life.

“Forget not my law;” life’s guidelines, in God’s word. Why, because living according to God’s design will give you “length of days.” Not just time spent, but really living each moment of every days. The blessing of an obedient life is better days.

Another benefit is “long life.” Not just good days strung together, but also, a reason to live those days. Today many people say, “I have no reason to live.” Even young people are committing suicide at alarming rates. However, if you live God’s way, He will guide you into a purpose for life.

In addition, you can have “peace.” The world can be at war daily, and you can still enjoy peace. Peace in your heart for each day you live with God’s guidance, and peace in your soul of your eternal dwelling with Him. A peace the world can’t give.

How can this life be ours? By keeping “mercy and truth,” two characteristics of morality, close to our hearts. Mercy omits selfishness and hate toward others, while truth will keep us from being liars and hypocritical. A Moral life does matter.

THE WORD WALKING IN ME:

Everyone wants people to be real with them. We all hate phonies and liars. People also want to “find favor,” or be loved by others. If “mercy and truth” would guide all our lives, what a better place this world would be. It never starts with others first. It begins with you and I. Let’s enjoy every moment of life.

Investing Wisely

January 27, 2020

DAILY PROVERBS:

Proverbs 2:20-22 That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous. For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it. But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.

OUTLOOK ON THE IN BOOK:

Wisdom and knowledge will not only give you a great life now, (and they will,) as they will help you to steer clear of evil men, and a sinful life in the present, but also, they will last with you through all eternity.

WOW! God’s Word. What an investment. You can invest in any market you want to today, and with 100% assurance I can tell you this, there is no eternal guarantee. In fact, every broker in the world will tell you that investing in stocks are risky. However, The Word of God is something you can invest in which has a promise of eternal value. What are the values?

  • First, you’ll walk in the company of good people. Why? Because you’ll begin to want to, so you will. Today you hang out with whom you want to. If you didn’t want to, you’d quit it.

  • Two, you’ll keep the paths of the righteous. In other words you’ll do right things. Think about it. If you’re hiding God’s wisdom and knowledge in your heart, and acting upon it, how can you do anything else but what the righteous would do. God makes people righteous by placing them in a right standing with Him through His Son Jesus and His word.

  • Three, you will have possessions in the Promised Land. Not the Promised Land which Israel has, but the Bible says we will rule and reign with Him (Jesus) when He returns.

  • Fourth, you’ll be perfect. Are you perfect now? I’ll wait while you go look in the mirror and ask yourself that question. Are you back? Ok, so we are not perfect now. Nevertheless, we are made perfect in Christ Jesus. We will be perfect when Jesus comes, and sin is removed forever.

  • Finally, all those who are a problem to your life today, will be saved, or gone!! We will live forever with Jesus.

THE WORD WALKING IN ME:

So what are you waiting for? Make a deposit today. Deposit a little time in God’s Word. Deposit some of the Word of God into your heart. You’ll be investing wisely, and the rewards are eternal!
