Genesis 35:11 And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;
Does what, and how God says things in His Word make a difference to you? I sure hope so. In this passage, God has introduced himself as “GOD ALMIGHTY.” Among many theologians, those who have studied the origin and meanings of words in the Bible, there seems to be differing opinions as to the root of the word ALMIGHTY.
Some claim it originates from the root of the word meaning “High Mountain.” If we are to use this understanding, God then is showing Himself above man, and above nature. He places Himself high above everything.
Another group says ALMIGHTY comes from the root of the word for “Power and Authority.” If we take this meaning, God would be showing His control of all things created.
I believe God is both. He is certainly above all things. He is above all men, all of nature, all calamities, all problems, all fears, and all wows. However, at the same time He also has the absolute power to make a difference in any of those things. Today I believe I will pass on getting into the debate over where the root meaning came from in the original Hebrew language. Instead, I am going to crawl into the loving arms of the ALMIGHTY, who is high above and in control of all creation, and simply rest in Him.
By the way, what God promised in today’s verse came true. Out of Jacob came many nations and kings. He is ALMIGHTY. He is high above anything we can imagine and has the power and authority to do anything. Will you find rest for your life in Him today?
