  Daily Reading – 2 Chron. 14-17 / Acts 6

 GOD’S WORD:

2 Chronicles 16:9 For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.

 GETTING INTO GOD’S WORD:

Every day we are faced with decisions. What do I have for breakfast? What clothes should I wear? Many of these decisions may not seem important, but we never know. For example, one lady every year, when fixing the Christmas ham, cuts two inches off each end before placing it in the baking pan. Her husband asked; “Why do you do that?” She said, “Mom always did that, so I do.” She called her mom and asked why she did that. Her mom said, “your grandma always did that, so I did too.” So, she called grandma and asked why did you always cut two inches off the ham before cooking it?” Grandma said, “Oh dear, I did so because the only pan I had to bake with was too small for the ham, so I cut some off each end to make it fit.”

Asa, King of Judah, enjoyed years of peace in his nation. This peace resulted from his decision to follow God, and to lead Judah to do the same. 2 Chron. 14:5-6 said the kingdom was quiet before him because the Lord had given him rest. Even when there was a huge battle with the Ethiopians, Asa called upon and trusted in God, and God delivered for him a great defeat. Yet, later in his reign, when another battle came up, instead of trusting God again, he called upon the worldly Syrians for help. In 2 Chron. 16:7-9 he was told; because you did not rely on the God who has always blessed you and defended you, but instead trusted in worldly relations, your days of peace are over.

 GETTING GOD’S WORD INTO ME:

I love the song, “This World Is Not My Home.” It reminds me that, even though I dwell in this place called earth, I have a Heavenly Father who loves and watches out for me while I am here, until I get HOME. Man will let you down. God will lift you UP!

Who do you rely on for daily help?

 Wrong Reasoning

  June 29, 2023
  Daily Reading – 2 Chron. 10-13 / Acts 5:29-42

 GOD’S WORD:

2 Chronicles 12:1 And it came to pass, when Rehoboam had established the kingdom, and had strengthened himself, he forsook the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him.

 GETTING INTO GOD’S WORD:

As children we played a game called “Simon Says.” In general, one person stood up front. That person would say, “Simon says, touch your nose.” Immediately everyone touched their nose. “Simon says, touch your ear.” Again, everyone would touch their ear. However, if the leader did not say “Simon Says,” before a command, and anyone obeyed that command, they were out. This continued until one person remained. The name “Simon” carried a lot of authority in that game. Anyone not following his leading, was out.

That is what happened to the children of Israel who stayed and followed King Rehoboam. This son of Solomon was not as wise as his daddy. He begins by refusing wise counsel from older men who served with Solomon, and instead, listening to a bunch of power-hungry guys about his own age that he grew up with. It splits the peaceful nation of Israel into two fighting fractions known as Israel to the north, and Judah to the south. Jeroboam, king of Northern Israel, totally rejects God to worship idols. However, Rehoboam begins right by worshiping God in Judah. Many of the children of Israel from the north and Levite Priests who wanted to continue to worship God came to Judah. This goes on for three years, making Judah and Rehoboam strong. Power and pride cause him to forsake God’s law, and it says, everyone followed his lead. Following Rehoboam and not God was wrong reasoning with horrible results.

 GETTING GOD’S WORD INTO ME:

Today we see people who want to be called “Followers of Christ,” yet are calling into question; “the Law of the Lord.” You cannot follow Christ, and not obey His Word. Man may lead you wrong for many reasons. God will never lead you wrong for any reason.

Do we follow man, or God?

  Daily Reading – 2 Chron. 7-9 / Acts 5:1-28

 GOD’S WORD:

2 Chronicles 7:16 For now have I chosen and sanctified this house, that my name may be there for ever: and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.

 GETTING INTO GOD’S WORD:

With ordering and shipping methods today, the time between ordering something and its arrival is often very short. Yet, from the moment we place the order until the day it arrives, there is that question in our minds, what will it be like when it arrives? Will it be what I imagined? Will it come with any missing parts or broken? There is that anticipation that builds until it comes. Then when it arrives, it is almost like Christmas. You can hardly wait. Not just to see the item you have ordered, but also to answer all the associated questions you have allowed to build in your mind. What a welcome relief if you find that it meets or exceeds your desires.

In 2 Chronicles 6 Solomon prayed a long prayer, asking God to look favorably on the place he had built for worship, and to bless all those who worshiped Him when they entered, or remembered Him and turned to this place. After his prayer, as with all of us, he simply had to wait upon the Lord for a response. For Solomon, the response was quick. In chapter 7 it says that when Solomon ended praying, God immediately and visibly answered his prayer. All who stood by saw the power and glory of God upon this place. Later in the night God met with Solomon in a more personal way, promising that He had chosen to answer every detail of his prayer. How wonderful it is when our shipment arrives, and all the pieces are there.

 GETTING GOD’S WORD INTO ME:

Solomon’s prayer was detailed and huge. He asked for some mighty great things of his God. We must remember, his God, is also the same God that we have today. When we pray in His will, He still answers mighty big prayers and in great detail.

What big things should ask from your God?

 Worshipful Rest

  June 27, 2023
  Daily Reading – 2 Chron. 4-6 / Acts 4

 GOD’S WORD:

2 Chronicles 6:40 Now, my God, let, I beseech thee, thine eyes be open, and let thine ears be attent unto the prayer that is made in this place.

 GETTING INTO GOD’S WORD:

Farmers probably know better than anyone what it feels like to have to rely simply on God’s provision. Sure, they work very hard breaking up the soil. Endless hours are spent planting the seed. It may be a year where they even must dump tons of water on the crop to aid in its growth. Yet, after all is said and done, they must wait and realize, it all rests in God’s hands. They cannot make the sun shine, nor prevent the howling winds or damaging hail from falling. There is no control of the scorching heat or the freezing cold destroying all that they work so hard to produce. At some point they know, it all rests in God’s hands. Most farmers know how to pray.

In our text, Solomon has prayed, what is recorded as one of his longest prayers in scripture. His father David worked for years securing the materials. Solomon and the dedicated people of Israel had sacrificed materials and much of their time to construct this marvelous Temple. They had built it exactly as God had described it should be built. The priests were careful to bring the Ark into its midst as God had desired for it to be carried. Yet, with all the planning and preparing, with all the gold, silver, and brass, with all the attention paid to the details, if God did not inhabit this place, it meant nothing. Here in 2 Chronicles 6:40 Solomon says, “Now, my God, let, I beseech thee,…” In Worshipful Rest in God’s will, Solomon must now wait on the Lord.

 GETTING GOD’S WORD INTO ME:

Isaiah 40:31 says, “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Worshipful and Rewarding Rest.

Is waiting work, or worship?

Wise Request

  June 26, 2023
  Daily Reading – 2 Chron. 1-3 / Acts 3

 GOD’S WORD:

2 Chronicles 1:10 Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?

 GETTING INTO GOD’S WORD:

Why do you go to church? I read a story of a husband and wife driving home from church and the wife asked the husband, “Did you see Harriet’s hat?” The husband said, “no, I guess I did not.” After a short pause, she inquired, “Did you see the pastors new tie?” Again, the husband responded, “sorry, I must have missed that too.” Again, there was a pause and the wife asked, “did you see Miss Martha’s new necklace and earrings?” The husband replied, “No honey, I did not see the jewelry either.” To which she abruptly snapped, “Why do you even go to church?” The truth is, we often do things for the wrong reason, or for no reason at all.

Everyone has read how Solomon asked for wisdom and knowledge, instead of wealth or power, and God blessed him with everything. Yet in his request we can see he is already wise. It is not the “WHAT,” but the “WHY,” that makes this such a wise request. Solomon realized without the wisdom of God; he would never be able to do the job God had called him to do. For him to be the leader God expected him to be, he was going to need a lot more wisdom and understanding than he by himself had. The “WHY” of Solomon’s request is what makes this such a wise request. To be all that God calls us to be requires the leading and guiding of God in our lives. When we think we have it all figured out on our own, we are in serious trouble.

 GETTING GOD’S WORD INTO ME:

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” If this is what we want, and what we do, we will be wise like Solomon.

How wise are you?
