Anything, For A Friend
November 21, 2024
DAILY PROVERB:
Proverbs 28:19-21
He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough. A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent. To have respect of persons is not good: for for a piece of bread that man will transgress.
OUTLOOK ON THE IN BOOK:
It is wonderful to have a friend – someone you know you can trust and rely on.
Everyone desires to be liked and admired for who they are. Today, you can see people everywhere doing whatever it takes to gain approval. It happens in schools where teens might compromise their principles just to fit in with certain groups. It happens in the workforce, where employers often demand more from employees while giving less in return. People are willing to do what’s necessary because they want to be liked, accepted, and successful. It may even seem that if you don’t comply with others’ expectations, the supposed friendship may end. Why does it seem this way? Well, because if we don’t do what’s expected, someone else might, and they then appear to be a better friend.
The Bible warns us about this attitude, stating that “for a piece of bread,” a friend may forsake you. If so, that friendship wasn’t based on love or respect but on selfishness. The world we live in today often focuses on what others can do for them, rather than what they can do for others. It’s a mindset that if what’s happening around me doesn’t benefit me, I’m out of here.
God’s Word, on the other hand, calls Christians to do the opposite. It’s not about asking, “What can I get?” but rather, “What can I give?” The Bible doesn’t instruct us to find people to love us; instead, it tells us to love our neighbors. Jesus Himself said that He came to earth not to be served but to serve others. So, instead of spending so much time trying to please people, strive to be a good friend. Please God with all you do, and you will have a true friend for all eternity.
THE WORD WALKING IN ME:
Suppose we will be more Christ-like; we must get our eyes off ourselves and back on the Saviour. In Luke 9:48, Jesus held a child and said, “he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.” This world needs a friend. A real friend. Be the best of friends and introduce them to an eternal friend who will never forsake them, Jesus.
Who would you rather have favor with, God or man?
